Our goal at Blue State Coffee is to run a zero waste, sustainable business. Our green practices include the following:

  • We brew locally roasted organic, fair trade, and shade grown coffee.
  • Source all our milk from local suppliers, buy all of our fresh foods and baked goods from local purveyors, and use organic ingredients when possble.
  • Use almost exclusively compostable and biodegradable paper goods including:
    • PLA (A compostable plastic made 100% from corn) cold cups, straws, lids, and soufflé cups
    • PLA-lined hot cups (most hot cups have a petroleum-based liner!)
    • Potato starch disposable knives, forks, and spoons
  • We donate all of our coffee grinds to local farms and school programs for compost.
  • We donate all day-old pastries to a local food pantry.
  • Our stores recycle paper, cardboard, milk jugs, and bottles.
  • Our cleaning products are all eco-friendly and biodegradable.
  • We offer a $.25 discount to customers who bring their own mug, which cuts down on waste. We also sell a travel mug made from 100% USA corn.
  • Our 300 Thayer Street, Providence store is powered with 100% local wind power through the New England Wind Fund.
  • We host speakers to educate community members on steps they can take to reduce their impact on the environment.
  • We advise local businesses that want to switch to eco-friendly alternatives and set up recycling/composting programs.
  • We are developing an espresso/coffee truck powered by local, renewable energy — and possibly coffee grounds!

Additionally Blue State Coffee donates 5% of every sale to progressive charities. This allows us to make an immediate and direct contribution to worthy causes around the country and in our local community.
