This weekend at the Northeast Regional Barista Competition, Blue State Coffee’s Benjamin Wilkinson (that’s me) took 5th place! This was Benjamin’s second year competing and he was proud to represent Blue State Coffee and New Harvest Coffee Roasters. Barista competitions are a great way to promote our company and the coffee industry, and to meet a lot of exciting people.
Benjamin would like to thank everyone at Blue State, Gerra, Rik, Devlin & Dan at New Harvest, and, especially his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Ellia, for their unfailing support.

Blue State Coffee to Operate the Brown Bookstore’s College Hill Café!
Providence, RI, February 5th – The College Hill Café—operated by Blue State Coffee, a socially responsible coffee company that donates 5% of sales to local and national progressive causes—has opened at the Brown University Bookstore!
In the College Hill Café, Blue State Coffee will expand upon its commitment to philanthropy, sustainability, and contributing to the local community in a positive way. Customers vote on which causes the College Hill Café will support and how to allocate donations. Blue State Coffee’s Providence store, located at 300 Thayer Street, has given away over $70,000 to local organizations like Summerbridge, Save the Bay, and College Visions.
The College Hill Café menu features organic, Fair Trade, artisan coffee small-batch roasted by New Harvest Roasters in Pawtucket, RI. Other items include sandwiches from Local 121, pastries and baked goods from Bristol Bakery, and desserts from Pastiche. All day-old food items are donated to Amos House, a local food pantry.
The College Hill Café is one of the leading eco-friendly coffee stores. The Café’ uses compostable serving products and composts all its coffee grounds. Blue State Coffee’s goal is to operate a zero-waste business.
“We hope to establish the College Hill Café as a contributing member of the Providence and Brown communities.” says co-founder Andrew Ruben. “In partnership with the Bookstore, we plan to host events such as art shows, voter registration drives, local band performances, environmental and political lectures by Brown faculty, and speeches by politicians and activists.” Recent events in Blue State Coffee have included talks with Al Franken, Kal Penn, and Craig Robinson.
