Free Rice

It doesn’t get much better than this.

Yesterday I heard about a website with two goals. Improving the reader’s vocabulary, and ending world hunger (and it is also a game!)
Check out www.freerice.com to play. All you have to do is answer vocabulary questions, and for each word you correctly define, 20 grains of rice will be donated through the United Nations World Food Program. Each donation is funded by a banner advertisement which appears as at the bottom of the page.

20 grains doesn’t sound like that much right? Enter the power of the internet where lots and lots and lots of people can come and play. The website is only 7 weeks old, and yesterday alone 369 million grains of rice were donated.

I love it.

Narration Plays to Full House

Blue State had its first concert. Last Friday evening under dimmed lights UK band Narration played in front of a packed house. Due to fact that only three of the four band members were available the audience was treated to an intimate acoustic set. Very emotional stuff.

Upcoming 300 Thayer store events

We are coming up on our 4 month anniversary at our first store, and life is good! With the temperature dropping, steamed cider and pumpkin lattes have arrived, along with our ever-popular hot chocolate and mochas.

Here are a couple events to get you perked up for these long nights.

-We are currently holding trivia night every Tuesday at 7PM. Come on over for fun, humor, and great prizes!

-This Friday Narration, a great band from London will be performing a set at 8PM.

In the next few weeks you can look forward to a sustainable living workshop series and regular lectures to commence as well!

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day, a day in which we honor those men and women who have served our country to protect our freedoms. We at Blue State Coffee encourage every American to take a few minutes today to reflect on those freedoms and on how fortunate we are to have the opportunities we do as American citizens.

Thank you, veterans.

Pumpkin Carving Contest Results

First, thanks to everyone that showed up and carved a pumpkin last week! We hope you had as much fun as we did. Congrats to our contest winner, Millee Tibbs, who will receive a free Blue State Gift Card for carving what was definitely our most intriguing entry.

Al Franken visits Blue State Coffee

This last tuesday October 30th, we were lucky enough to have Al Franken visit our store at 300 Thayer in Providence! In case you have not heard already, Al Franken is running for senate in Minnesota, and doing very well so far.

After signing books and taking pictures with the gathered crowd, Al gave an inspiring talk on his candidacy for the senate to a packed store. While he was talking I was impressed how he came across not as a politician, but rather a concerned citizen who has seen the need for change. To learn more about his bid for the senate, or perhaps to donate to his campaign visit alfranken.com.

Thanks for coming Al, and we all wish you a victory in Minnesota next fall!
